What is mercer?
This infection, commonly known as "staph", is a virulent form of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus . It's a strain of staph that's not affected by the majority of antibiotics commonly used for treatment.
It can infect you in many ways,
boils, styes and abscess are the most common. But it can start as a pimple or ingrown hair, sometimes people think they have a spider bite, but it is really MRSA. Other people may have worse symptoms, cellutitis, impetigo, carbuncles. These symptoms can be very painful and dangerous but is it fatal? Can you die from MRSA?
Who has MRSA?
Staph bacteria are commonly found in the nose or on the skin in one-third of the population, around 4 million in the US alone. You are considered "colonized" but not infected if you have staph in your nose or on your skin but aren't sick. Healthy people can be colonized and have no ill effects. However, more and more healthy people are getting infected each day, and they can pass the bacteria to others.
How you can get it.
Generally, Staph bacteria are harmless unless they enter the body through a cut or other wound, and even then they often cause only minor skin problems in healthy people. However, staph infections can cause serious illness, in the form of skin and soft tissue infections and a more dangerous form of pneumonia.
This bacteria lives off the body as well.
Places like door knobs, workout equipment, toys at day care, school gyms and locker rooms where your kids are. This is Serious! Please don't think MRSA is only in the hospitals, and only infects the elderly and the sick. It's even in our homes!
In the past most infections originated in hospitals
and other health care settings. This is known as HA-MRSA, because it is found in health care-associated facilities. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at the most risk.
Recently though, another type is occurring among otherwise healthy people in our communities. This form, CA-MRSA or community-associated is being found in more public places like the mall, buses, I was infected on a commercial fishing vessel and of course it's in our state prisons. Community-associated infections are on the rise and this is what they are calling SUPERBUG.
How I got it.
CA-MRSA is where my story begins. As a healthy 44 year old male I found myself having to deal with this life threatening disease while on a 5 day fishing trip. It needs to be stressed that something as simple as scratching an ingrown hair can allow mercer a way in. View my story to learn about symptoms to be on the lookout for, and the treatment I truly believe has accelerated the healing process and stopped my outbreaks so far!
